Easter Feast at Providence

Easter Feast at Providence – A Greek Celebration
On Easter Sunday, we gather in the afternoon for our annual Easter feast, a time of food, fellowship, and joy as we celebrate the goodness of God through the resurrection of His Son.
The food theme for our meal is Greek. We chose Greek food because of its deep feasting heritage—the earliest known cookbook comes from Greece! Easter is also the most celebrated holiday in Greece, even surpassing Christmas. While this could be seen as a cultural tradition, it reflects an essential truth: the resurrection is the pinnacle of our faith. As Paul writes, without the resurrection, our faith is in vain—there is no hope without it.
The Easter feast in Greece is a vibrant display of flavors, textures, and colors that reflect the glory of the event being celebrated. Two essential components of the meal are wine and lamb. In Greece, Easter is called Pascha, a name derived from the Hebrew word for Passover. The New Testament presents Christ as the fulfillment of the ancient Passover—the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. As we confess weekly, “Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us!” Later in Scripture, Christ appears as the risen Lamb who reigns from heaven. Not surprisingly, roasted lamb is the centerpiece of Greek Easter feasts, and its popularity as an Easter dish worldwide reflects its deep Christian symbolism. Wine also plays a key role in the celebration, symbolizing the joy of Christ’s resurrection—a joy that transcends even death.
Historically, the Greek Easter celebration outshines ours, so we’ve made it our tradition to borrow from their customs. Of course, we won’t be adopting all their traditions (we’ll skip the burning of an effigy of Judas, for example), but even a Protestant can recognize a good meal when he tastes one!
Beyond these cultural and historical reasons, there are other benefits to this choice of fare. Greek food isn’t the norm in most of our homes, so preparing it requires thought, time, and effort—making it special. And that’s at the heart of a true feast: breaking from the ordinary to partake in something extraordinary. Greek cuisine is also perfect for getting the whole family involved. Whether layering pastitsio, braiding Tsoureki or prepping elements of a Greek salad, everyone—young and old—can contribute to the meal. It’s a great way to start family traditions and a fun opportunity to take ourselves lightly if our attempts don’t turn out quite like they did on Pinterest!
So, with all this in mind, “Let us keep the Feast.” We look forward to joining together for a time of food, fellowship and joy as we celebrate the goodness of our God to us through the resurrection of His Son!
